Decolonizing diet culture and our approach to non-diet coaching is essential for the healing of all of our clients and it goes beyond simply white people’s food.
Diet culture causes harm beyond the diet mentality. It demonizes the foods that are the very foundation of traditional diets across the globe. Moreover, it centers on the white narrative of what is “healthy”.
Non-diet coaches need to understand how diet culture is yet another system that centers on the white experience. Certainly, we need to know how to hold space for our clients who have been taught that their food is “bad.” That is to say, we play an active role in decolonizing diet culture in our practices.
Decolonizing Diet Culture in Practice
Decolonizing diet culture in practice requires being intentional with our language around food and what we call “cultural” food. At the end of the day – all food is simply just food and our language needs to reflect that.
Decolonizing diet culture in practice also requires curiosity and humility. We do this by asking questions that will help you understand your client’s experience with food and their culture.
