In this episode, we’re going to explore the concept of rebellious eating – and how you can harness its power for self-liberation.
Defining Rebellious Eating
Rebellious eating occurs when we use food or eating as a way to resist authority and reassert our autonomy. It’s a response from our inner world to the urge we have as functioning adult human beings to live an autonomous life.
Society puts forth all sorts of norms and expectations around our bodies, our food, and who we “should” be. When we try to control our eating and our bodies to meet these external guidelines, our nervous system pushes back. Rebellious eating is our way of fighting for self-determination and the right to self-nourish.
The Liberating Power of Rebellious Eating: The Restrictor and the Restricted
Here’s the key thing to understand: when it comes to rebellious eating, we are both the restrictor and the restricted. We unconsciously agree to engage in controlling our food, while at the same time feeling restricted in our innate desire to feed ourselves.
We look to the outside world and buy into the idea that we need to look and eat a certain way. Then, in our own minds, we enforce these expectations upon ourselves through food restriction. It’s a vicious cycle of being both the controller and the controlled.
The Liberating Power of Rebellious Eating: Claiming Self-Authorization
The solution to rebellious eating lies in reclaiming our self-authorization. We need to build the skill set to believe that we, not external “experts,” are the authority over our lives, our bodies, and our health.
As women living in a patriarchal society, we’ve been conditioned to constantly look outside of ourselves for approval and guidance. But the path to true freedom comes when we authorize ourselves to make decisions about our lives, our bodies, and our eating – without relying on the validation of others.
The Liberating Power of Rebellious Eating: Allowing Ourselves to Be Imperfect
Ending rebellious eating is not about perfecting our eating or our bodies. It’s about allowing ourselves to be imperfect, to not meet the unrealistic standards set by diet culture and society.
Do you want to eat more vegetables? Great. But it’s also okay if you don’t. The key is giving yourself the permission to make those choices for yourself, rather than constantly feeling like you “should” be doing something different.
The same goes for our bodies. Can you give yourself the allowance to be the size your body wants to be, without extreme effort? Can you allow yourself to have wrinkles, to not wear makeup every day, to age with grace and dignity?
Becoming the Palm Tree
When you’re in your power, you may still experience some “wavering” – times when your body or your eating changes, and you feel uncomfortable. But like a palm tree, you remain grounded in your self-authority.
You know that you’re not going to give your power away to diet culture or wellness gurus. There’s no going back to restrictive behaviors or extreme measures. Instead, you’ll find a way to navigate the changes with flexibility and resilience.
So take a listen, and get ready to embrace the liberating power of rebellious eating. Because your health, your body, and your life are yours to define – no one else’s.
